It’s time to welcome the NEW YEAR – 2012 – and congratulate our new and re-elected Democratic Officials throughout Cayuga County. We wish them all the best as they prepare to serve during a very challenging time for all levels of government.

The 2011 election results were bitter – sweet. Sweet - for first time candidates Mark Farrell and Joe Bennett who easily took County Legislative seats from Republican opponents, and especially delicious for Democratic Mayoral Candidate – Mike Quill winning re- election to a second term as Auburn Mayor and sending his opponent back to the County Office Building.

Thursday, December 22, 2011 unfortunately marked the last Auburn City Council meeting for Democratic City Councilors Gilda Brower and Tom McNabb. Losing by under 60 votes, a very close race for Tom McNabb, who has held the council seat for an incredible 16 years. Thank you Tom!

Tributes to City Councilors Brower and McNabb

2012 is a new chapter yet to be written. We hope you will be part of it.

You know, the interesting thing about Timmy, is that he hasn’t changed–since the first time he ran for office in Auburn he has been full of promise and never delivered. He even commented on this problem himself at the Ignite Forum at CCCC. He said he has a little problem getting reelected to anything! DUH. You think it might have something to do with his lack of accomplishment in office. The guy may have political skills–loves to campaign and glad-hand. Talks a good game. Then, nothing.

This is from an editorial in the Auburn Citizen in 1991—that’s right 20 long years ago.Tim was running for re-election to the City Council and the local paper chose not to endorse him for another term. They said, in part,

” Lattimore is a man of considerable potential gone sour…he disappoints people who had hoped some of his father’s magic would attract industry and jobs to the community…Mr. Lattimore has taught us to mistrust his agenda , and his devisiveness neutralizes his greatest strength, a powerful imagination–(he) is insensitive to the appearance of impropriety…he tolerates, sometimes initiates, illegal closed-door discussions. Mr. Lattimore has failed to forge consensus behind a single worthy idea, partly because he seizes credit not due him..Mr Lattimore has energy, charisma and imagination. We wish he had the rest of the leadership characteristics…”

You know how bad they thought he was?? They endorsed Jerry Morgan over Tim–Fortunately they both lost.

The voters of Auburn have seen enough—everyone is polite and smiles back at him. That’s just the kind of nice town this is. But, just wait for the tally on the 8th.

The 2011 Election Season is in full swing!! Cayuga County Democrats, candidates and volunteers have been working since early spring to build the foundation for a winning campaign season.

By now, many of you have met our dynamic candidate for District Attorney, Jon Strods. He and his merry band of supporters have been doing the parade circuit from Fair Haven to Moravia including a big presence in Owasco on the Fourth of July. Jon is receiving a very warm response and lots of encouragement—especially from Republicans! Lots of folks want a change in the D.A.’s office.

There are three hotly contested races for the County Legislature. Our number one target has to be District 10. Joe Bennett is running a door to door person to person campaign and he will unseat the Chairman of the legislature, I am sure. The open seats in Districts 6 and 14 promise to be active campaigns. Terry Lattimore ran a strong race last time in the Owasco-Sennett District and this year’s campaign will be successful. Political newcomer, Dom Basile is our Democratic candidate in District 14. He is a lifelong resident of Auburn, knows the City and knows a lot of people—we are fortunate that he has decided to step into the political arena. ALL THREE OF THESE SEATS SHOULD BE DEMOCRATIC. Our incumbent Legislator in District 12, Patrick Mahunik, has no opponent, so he is looking forward to a relaxed campaign season!

Citywide in Auburn, we absolutely must retain all three Democratic incumbents—Team Auburn—Mayor Mike Quill, and Councilors Tom McNabb and Gilda Brower. The record is clear—These Democrats have supported new creative ideas to revitalize Downtown. They have made prudent choices on the City finances in very tough economic times. And the conduct of City business and morale of City employees have been enhanced by their leadership. Leading the City and representing the City takes more than empty fantastic promises and photo ops. These three have moved past the negativism and kept the City on course for a more prosperous future.

If you are looking for ways to help elect your favorite candidate, or just want to support your local Democratic Party. We have plenty of options. Many candidates have websites, or Facebook pages that will give you information on who, when and where to help. Donations of your time and dollars are essential to a winning campaign. Aside from contributing to the candidates, dollars donated to the county committee are used to run the day to day operations —paper, phone costs, lists, postage,–all the nuts and bolts stuff that we need to maintain a presence in Cayuga County.

Check back often! We’ve designed our site to provide the Chair with a blog. Kate has been given a forum for comments and thoughts. This will be fun if nothing else.

I look forward to meeting you on the campaign trail!

Kate Lacey, Party Chair
